Growing Readers

Congratulations & Welcome to you
and your little one(s)!
By age one, children recognize about 50 words; by age three, 1,000; and by age five, they recognize at least 10,000 words! Did you know that the library can provide you free resources and programs to enhance your child’s early learning? We are here to help parents and caregivers promote kindergarten readiness at the library so that their young children can start school ready to learn.

An Early Access Library Card gives you and your child(ren) a big head start right away – with immediate access to our eResources!

While this card will work for a year even if you do not live in WV, non-residents can still pay a small annual fee for a library card for further collection use! Residents just need to renew to a full access card and will gain access to our physical materials.
Want even more?
Consider stopping in beforehand and renewing to a full card at a Brooke County Location, sign up for our 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Program, gain an Early Literacy Kit Bag, sign up for Dolly Parton Imagination Library, or attend a program.

Please note that the Growing Reader Kit is a work in progress and will hopefully be something given out in partnership with a Labor & Delivery Department, Pediatric Office, Baby Safety Shower, and/or with local entities (such as Parents as Teachers, WIC, WV Birth to Three, Northern Panhandle Headstart, and more). Currently, it will contain the Growing Read Card, a book, and two Flyers (one for Dolly Parton Imagination Library Sign-ups and one for 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten). If you are interested in partnership or support, please contact the library director. These kits will be used for outreach and will not be available in-house. Our first set of cards will be issued in May of 2026.
