Resume Tip #49 - Trim, Trim, Trim

We've said in most of our resume tips that your resume should always be a one-pager. Even in today's digital world a one-page resume is the goal and the perfect length to impress but not overwhelm your potential employer.

So, today we've advising you to trim, trim, and trim your resume. It can be hard to find enough words to fill the page, especially for people with short work histories or if it's in your nature to just be short, sweet, and to the point. The good news is that the manager looking for a new team member just wants the basics most of all.

Are you tempted to turn one sentence about your job duties into a whole paragraph? Think again! While you should have at least three to five details about your daily workload from each position mentioned, you generally do not need any more.

Maybe you think bullet points look great, but you are worried you don't have enough examples for them to look impressive? Keep the number of them low then, or you can take out the bullet points and use small sections or paragraphs instead.

Above all, keep your personal history and interests out of your resume unless asked for those or filling a little space. For example, unless you are applying to a place where you work with animals like a zoo, vet's office, shelter, pet sitting, or as a dog walker, your possible new employer doesn't need to know you love dogs.

In short, keep your resume short, sweet, and to the point! And you'll be a standout candidate for sure.

Keep in mind, your local library is always here to help with your job search.
