Leaving Independence by William W. Johnstone & J. A. Johnstone.
Independence, Missouri, 1865. Seasoned wagon master Virgil Grissom prepares to lead a new group of families westward across the Oregon Trail. Among them are struggling farmer Matt Moran, his wife Katie, and their three small children. In spite of the long, treacherous journey ahead, Grissom is confident that this solid, hard-working farmer and his family are tough enough to endure the harsh elements, the rugged terrain, and the occasional run-in with hostile tribes. But he's not so sure about the farmer's younger brother, Clay, who plans to catch up with them along the trail. Alone. Which has Grissom worried ...On the Oregon Trail, a lone man is dead man. Clay Moran fought hard in the Civil War, serving as lieutenant in the US Calvary. Now that Robert E. Lee has surrendered, Clay is free to head west with his brother's family. Problem is, the wagon train has left Independence already--and Clay has to go it alone. Luckily, the army let him keep his horse. But when a couple of bushwhackers steal that horse and all his money, he's left high and dry. If Clay hopes to catch up with the wagon train, he'll have to rely on his wits. His guts. And every skill he learned in the war. Along the way, he'll have to do things a man should never have to do--just to survive ...

Blood Moon by Sandra Brown.
Detective John Bowie is one misstep away from being fired from the Auclair Police Department in coastal Louisiana. Recently divorced and slightly heavy-handed with his liquor, Bowie does all that he can to cope with the actions taken (or not taken) during the investigation of Crissy Mellin, a teenage girl who disappeared more than three years prior. But now, Crisis Point, a long-running true crime television series, is soon to air an episode documenting the unsolved Mellin case. Bowie has been instructed by his unscrupulous boss to keep to his grievances and criticisms over the mishandling of the investigation to himself. Beth Collins, a senior producer on Crisis Point, knows what classifies as a great story and when there's something more to be told. After working on the show for seven years, Collins is convinced that Crissy Mellin's disappearance was not an isolated incident. A string of disappearances of teenage girls in nearby areas have only one thing in common: They took place on the night of a blood moon. In a last-ditch effort to find out the truth, Beth enlists Detective Bowie to help her figure out what happened to Crissy and find the true culprit before he acts on the next blood moon--in four days' time. With their jobs and their lives at risk, Bowie and Collins band together to identify and capture a perpetrator, while fighting an irresistible spark between them that threatens to upend everything.
Adult Non-Fiction
Queen of All Mayhem by Dane Huckelbridge.
On February 3, 1889, just two days shy of her forty-first birthday, Myra Maybelle Shirley--better known at that point by her outlaw sobriquet "Belle Starr"--was blown from her horse saddle and killed by a pair of shotgun blasts, delivered by an unseen assailant, only a few miles away from her home in the Indian Territory of present-day Oklahoma. Thus ended the life of one of the most colorful, authentic, and dangerous women in the history of the American West. While today's household names like Annie Oakley and Calamity Jane had dubious criminal bona fides, Belle's were not in any doubt. She led a gang of horse thieves (a very serious crime in an era when horses were often the basis of one's livelihood); was romantically involved with two of the West's most legendary outlaws, Cole Younger and Jim Reed (her first husband); and participated in stickups and robberies across present-day Texas and Oklahoma. When Reed was murdered, Belle crossed into Indian Territory, where she assimilated into the Cherokee tribe, a matrilineal society, and soon married Sam Starr, a direct descendant of Nanye'hi, the greatest female warrior in Cherokee history.
Chase the Devil by Tony Adame.
On December 31, 1984, Tonya Ethridge McKinley was out with friends celebrating New Year's Eve and the start of her new life in Pensacola, Florida. Finally free from an abusive relationship, she was just weeks from her 24th birthday and moving toward becoming the person she'd always wanted to be. When Tonya's body was found dumped on the side of the road, half-naked, raped, beaten, and choked to death in the early-morning hours of New Year's Day, it was the first of two unsolved rapes and murders in the same area in the first two months of the year. Chase the Devil takes readers back to that rainy December night in 1984 and barrels forward like a freight train, moving across the decades and diving into the details of the crime and inside the lives of the victims and their families, the suspects, and the law enforcement officers who kept the case alive.
