3 Stars - Another exciting thriller featuring CID agents Scott Brodie and Maggie Taylor. Both are sharp, reckless, and bring a dark sense of humor to a murder investigation. I'm about 50/50 on whether or not reading The Deserter first makes a big difference. I read it but it was many years ago, and while there are some mild spoilers to the first story, this one basically stands on its own. The side characters somehow are both irritating at times but you come to care about them. There's a lot of details to sift through as these are at their core mysteries with a hint of action thriller. And I don't think it would be possible to guess how things went down in the last hundred or so pages. It's a bit of a wild twist, maybe a tad far-fetched for some readers. But I really enjoyed the intense ending and the Cold War background and atmosphere.
