3.5 Stars - A surprisingly exciting Highland romance. The cover misleading as this is much more than a regular steamy love story. Graeme and Eveline are a fantastic leading duo, overcoming personal and physical struggles while leading the clan, avoiding war, and sussing out the true villian.

Banks' goes beyond the smutty side of these historical romances in this one, and writes a minature epic. Graeme and his brothers are young but effective leaders. Their main struggle is being at odds with the Armstrongs due to a past generation's rivalry. When Graeme is forced to marry Eveline as part of a truce, she is full of surprises. Graeme navigates his relationship with her, as well as the rivalry, with bravery and kindness. Eveline is really the star of the book though, clever and determined. She finds ways to overcome her deafness and her greatest weakness is being a bit too trusting.

This one was pretty action-packed, but there was some downtime too. It probably could have been about one hundred pages shorter. The Montgomery and Armstrong families are large and full of interesting characters, but things get a bit repetitive. Banks' steamy scene readers might be a bit disappointed, probably only finding two or three chapters that showcase her usual spicy-ness levels. There is no great mystery here, but it is fun to watch Eveline and Graeme work to figure out who they can trust. The story, I thought, was rather effectively paced for being lengthy. And I can't speak to the authenticity of historical Scottish culture. But this was a really fun read that outperformed my expectations. Fans of historical romance, headstrong heroines, and classic heroes will probably really enjoy it as well.
